Fashank in Slovakia

Fashank is the Slovak equivalent of “Maslenitsa”, farewell to winter. Slovaks celebrate fašank at the end of February, approximately from February 20 to February 25.

The main dish for fashank is, of course, pancakes. Unlike our sweet and buttery ones, Slovaks make thick savory pancakes.

Also in Slovakia, there is a tradition these days to hold costumed processions of “mummers” who, gathering in groups of several people, go around houses, dancing and singing songs – carols. Ahead of the column of mummers is a “turon”. A special feature of Slovak carols on Fašank is the “saber dance”, which they perform right during the procession.

Also in some villages, Slovaks organize bonfires on which they burn an effigy symbolizing the cold winter.
