Roman Carnival is a colorful carnival that takes place in Rome in February-March before the start of Lent. 40 days from Easter (before the arrival of Ash Wednesday according to the Western Catholic calendar).

It goes on for 10 days. The date of its holding is different every year, as it is tied to Easter and the church calendar.

In 2017, the Roman Carnival will take place on February 28th. In 2018 – February 13. In 2019 – March 5. In 2020 – February 25. The main day of the carnival is Mardi Gras (that is, “Fat Tuesday,” the Western version of the Slavic “Maslenitsa”).

The main events of the Carnival in Rome take place in Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and in the Corso area – the main shopping street of the city. The carnival is filled with colorful street processions of people dressed in carnival costumes, concerts and street shows. It begins with a procession of masks, riders on horses (horse guards), horse-drawn carts and carriages. Then there are more than a hundred different events and performances: competitions for the best costume, tasting of Italian wines and dishes, puppet theater performances and much more.

Festive food at the carnival is crispy sweet brushwood “frappe” and sweet balls “castagnole”.

The carnival ends with festive fireworks.
