Foundation Day of Czechoslovakia

Foundation Day of Czechoslovakia (Den vzniku samostatného československého státu) is still a public holiday in the Czech Republic today, despite the fact that such a state no longer exists.

Czechs celebrate the Foundation Day of Czechoslovakia on October 28. It was on this day in 1918, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that the creation of the new independent state of Czechoslovakia was announced.

Czechoslovakia existed until 1993, when, as a result of the collapse of the Soviet camp, two independent states emerged on the world map: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. But Czechs continue to celebrate October 28 today, since this date is a symbol of the creation of the first national Czechoslovak Republic.

On October 28, in Prague the country’s authorities hold a military parade, speeches by politicians, and presentation of important state awards. Anyone can get to the Czech Parliament on this day – there is an open day here. In the evening, concerts and colorful fireworks are held.
