Polish Army Day

Polish Army Day is an official public holiday in Poland, which is celebrated annually on August 15 in memory of the Battle of Warsaw in 1920.

On August 13, 1920, Poland’s independence was again under threat. The Red Army stood near the capital of the country. On this day, August 15, when the Poles celebrated the day of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the residents of Warsaw, having performed a prayer service and a religious procession around the city, managed to raise the morale of the army, which defeated the Red Army under the command of General M. Tukhachevsky and went on the offensive. Soviet troops were significantly pushed back from the Polish capital.

Today, August 15th, is an official holiday in Poland. In Warsaw, in honor of this event, a military parade, prayer services, rallies, and concerts are held. On the same day, Poles also celebrate a major church event – the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
