St. Stephen’s Day Stefanstag is the day of remembrance of Stephen the First Martyr, the first Christian martyr, who was stoned in Jerusalem around 33-36. After his death, his cult quickly spread throughout the Christian world. The main Vienna Cathedral Stephandom is dedicated to St. Stephen.
St. Stephen’s Day in Vienna(as well as in the West in general) is celebrated annually on December 26th. On this day, it is customary to exchange gifts, go on visits, and gather in groups outdoors. This holiday is one of a whole series of Christmas holidays that are so popular in Europe.
