River Limmat (Limmat) is a small picturesque river that flows from Lake Zurich and flows through the historical center of Zurich. Further downstream after 36 km. it flows into the larger river Are, which in turn flows into the Rhine.
In the Zurich area, the banks of this river are closely lined with beautiful old buildings, many of which stand directly on the water. It’s like a Swiss Venice. Some of these houses house restaurants and hotels. But most are just residential buildings.
The facades of some houses are very beautiful. A walk along the banks of the Limmat is one of the most vivid impressions that remained from visiting Zurich with Mashi Pasha.
The river divides Zurich into two parts – the right bank “Old Town” and the left bank “Small Town”. On its banks there are many significant attractions, including the main cathedrals of the city – Grossmünster and Fraumünster, the luxurious homes of the rich.
You can start a walk along the banks of the river near the Zurich train station and go towards the lake. This walk can take about 30 minutes. Locals call the Limmat River embankment Limmatquai. It stretches 800 meters from the Wasserkirsche Water Church to the Bahnhofbrucke Station Bridge.
If you wish, you can take a river boat near the railway station and sail on it to the lake. True, they only walk along the river in summer. Along their route, the boats stop several times off the coast of Limmat. Watch our video of the Limmat river and Zurich city center here:
There are several bridges across the river, the largest one is near the river’s confluence with the lake. Here you can feed ducks and swans, of which there are many swimming both on the river and on the lake itself.
