National Republic Day is an official public holiday in Austria. It is celebrated annually on October 26 in memory of the proclamation of the Austrian Republic and the policy of neutrality in 1955.
This date is associated with the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of Austria and with the signing of a state treaty between the USSR and Austria, which restored the independence of the Austrian state.
The main festive events on this day take place in the capital of Austria Vienna. On Heroes’ Square near Hofburg Palace in the city center there is a military parade and an exhibition of military equipment. At The Austrian Parliament at this time there is an “open day” – anyone can get there.
Since October 26 is an official holiday in Austria, local residents take part in various public events, go on holiday outside the city, and gather in groups in restaurants and cafes.
