Eid al-Adha

The Festival of SacrificeEid al-Adhais an Islamic holiday that marks the end of the pilgrimage (Hajj).

Muslims celebrate it according to the Islamic calendar on the 10th day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah. Therefore, according to the European (Gregorian) calendar, the date of the holiday turns out to be floating. Typically this holiday falls between the end of July and the beginning of September.

The holiday is celebrated in memory of the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim at the culmination of the Hajj to Mecca. Those Muslims who cannot go to Hajj celebrate the holiday at home. On this day, it is customary to pray, remember the dead, slaughter a sacrificial animal (usually a ram), and treat the poor and hungry. Many people simply visit each other, congratulate each other on the holiday, and give gifts.
