Feast of Sant Joan @ Барселона | Барселона | Каталония | Испания

The Feast of Sant Joan is one of the most popular holidays in Barcelona, dedicated to the longest day of the year (solstice day). It is similar to the Slavic holiday “Ivan Kupala”. Sant Joan is celebrated on the night of June 23-24. June 24 is an official day off.

The main event of this holiday in Barcelona is the night of fire (Nit del Foc). A few days before the holiday, all Catalans begin to actively stock up on fireworks and firecrackers, which are sold at every turn. As darkness falls, bonfires begin to be lit along the city beach (although in recent years the city authorities have banned this). Young people gather on the beaches and central streets of the city and light fireworks and firecrackers. Many people throw parties on their balconies and highways in the center of Barcelona, from which they can clearly see the festivities, inviting their friends and family to them. The whole city is just seething.

Among the attributes of the holiday are “Coque” pies, which are baked by all bakeries in the city on this day. They have different fillings. A prerequisite is to add anise to them.
