St. Martin's Day in Austria @ Вена | Вена | Вена | Австрия

St. Martin’s Day “Martiniganzel” is celebrated in Vienna every year on November 11th. This Catholic holiday in Austria has acquired its own local semi-pagan traditions and is a fairly popular folk holiday.

Martin’s Day marks the end of the harvest. On this holiday, Austrians traditionally cook goose with dumplings (special bread), cabbage and chestnuts. After St. Martin’s Day, Lent begins.

This day is also considered to be the day of new harvest wine. Residents of Vienna en masse travel to the suburbs, to small rural restaurants “Heuriger”, where they can taste the new wine of the new harvest. From this day on, the previous year’s wine harvest officially begins to be considered old.

Martiniganzel also marks the beginning of the winter season of balls and carnivals.
